The Eel

As a somewhat yearly recurring activity Kollision takes part in designing light installations for the Aarhus based NorthSide festival. Along with the Atmospheric team from NorthSide and light manufacturer Martin Professional we this year designed a wooden structure at one of the central areas in front of the Astra main stage.
The concept had the ambition to reuse elements from earlier installations so we turned to the grids of Arena designed for the NorthSide 2019.

The installation is designed as one continuous structure functioning as a bench as well as a visual landmark during the festival. The structural twists and turns create a number of smaller spaces for groups of people to hang out in. Along one side of the structure a ribbon or eel of LED grids are embedded into the wooden plywood surfaces. The ribbon is mainly turning inwards to light up the internal spaces rather than competing with stage shows of the festival artists.
At dusk dynamic light designs illuminate the structure emphasising the infinite loop of light as well as exploiting the spatial layout of lights.

Together with NorthSide Kollision designed the concept of the Eel and the layout of the LED grids. Using MAP we developed numerous lighting designs that were scheduled through the festival putting guests in changing lighting situations.
