THE CULTURE YARD
09.04.2005
WORKSHOP
In april 2005 Kollision was asked to organize a workshop on the abandoned shipyard in Helsingør – the setting for Shakespeare’s Hamlet. The goal was to provide a framework for dialogue on the planned Culture Yard on the basis of Helsingør Municipality's vision for the area.
PROCESS
The workshop involved a wide variety of participants; citizens, stakeholders, and representatives from the municipality. The participants were divided into groups and asked to develop a 'vision newspaper' on the basis of a series of presentations from invited speakers and a tour of the yard. Each group had to discuss a number of themes and aspects for the future culture yard, among them were outdoor spaces and activities, learning and culture, history and identity, art and culture; networks and workshops, events and venues; tourism and business.
OUTPUT
Each group held a series of ‘editorial meetings’ aimed at assembling and aligning the material in such a way that each group were forced to make the abstract ideas concrete practice and negotiate with the other groups to reach a common ground - all expressed in a single newspaper based on a template made by Kollision. In the end, the newspaper described the participants' values and ideas through text and pictures as a basis for the on-going process of creating a culture yard anchored in local values.
