The MATRIX

The Matrix taps into the NorthSide festival ambition focusing on climate and reuse. In 2018 Beacons of Light was distributed across the festival area and later stored at a NorthSide facility. In a design process with NorthSide and Martin Professional we reconfigured the beacons in a more dense structure and placed them on the new festival venue at Eskelund beneath a small slope leading to the Echo stage.

The Matrix consists of 16 five metre towers each topped out with a large lantern. The towers are distributed in a 4 by 4 matrix with a two metre spacing providing passage for guests through the installation.
The towers stand as silent giants at daytime casting precise shadows on the ground and at night establishing a calm atmosphere of light in a colour space of red and blue tones.

The NorthSide team refurbished and installed the 16 plywood towers. Martin Professional installed one Martin Exterior 410 wash light in each tower and Kollision designed a number of slow light designs and utilised MAP to control and schedule the content throughout the festival.
