During Aarhus Festival 2015 Kollision was challenged by the Festival secretariat to experiment with a part of the city located right in the city centre where the commercial axis of the main pedestrian shopping area crosses the recreational axis of the bars along the Aarhus River. The space below the Clemens Bridge is dark, uninviting and feels unsafe.
We decided to try to turn the area upside-down be making the gloomy underbelly of the bridge a light and inviting space, making people on the bridge stop and look down and people below the bridge cross the river and enter the normally forbidding area of darkness. By making the pillars pierce the bridge, we connected the two separate axes.
The project is comprised of seventeen pillars of varying length made of Lumino, mounted on steel foundations anchored to the riverbed. Lights controlled by Kollision’s player software were triggered by sensors on the small footbridge, lighting the white pillars at night.
