ROSKILDE TECHNICAL COLLEGE
In February 2010, Kollision was prequalified together with Arkitema and Rambøll for the competition for the expansion of Roskilde Technical College (RTS) in Roskilde, Denmark. The task was to come up with a visionary, challenging, robust and flexible solution to uniting various educational programs under one roof and integrating the college in the surroundings. The entry should include a master plan for the entire area, infrastructure, parking and outdoor activities as well as new construction of 17,000 m2.
THE CHALLENGES
The biggest challenge of the competition was to design a school, which was expected to be expanded to 17,000 m2, but with funding for only 4,000 m2 in the first phase. At the outset it was not decided which functions would be included in the first phase. Consequently, it was necessary to find a common principle, allowing for future construction to be integrated seamlessly, and at the same time not creating an unfinished building in the first phase. Another challenge was to create a building flexible enough to adapt to fluctuations in the number of students and varying popularity of different kinds of programs.
OUR ROLE
Our contribution was mainly within general concept development and creating a number of scenarios describing the future expansion of the RTS, both from a student, teacher and Musicon-guest perspective. In addition, we created a user participation strategy and a strategy for the use of a media facade on the CMK-tower, a new landmark for the RTS.
