THE COMPETITION
In 2008 Freja Ejendomme initiated a competition on a new 200.000 m2 research and knowledge park in Odense (SBC_O, Science and Business Park Odense) close to the University of Southern Denmark (SDU) and an existing research park. Furthermore Freja wanted the prequalified teams to sketch out an additional 100.000 m2 urban areas containing a number of public facilities functioning as a driver for the different user groups. In total six teams were prequalified to hand in their proposal - Kollision teamed up with Arkitema and 11CityDesign.
ENCLAVES IN THE FORREST
Our proposal was based on the establishment of a number of enclaves, constructed in accordance with the cyclical fluctuations and changes in public funding of business and research. Each enclave was situated in a forest glade and the first stage of the proposal was to plant a forest on the entire site. As the forest grows and the need for construction space raises cut-outs are made in the forest developing the structure of the plan. The individual enclaves and the public area are linked through a number of cycle routes putting bikes in favour of cars, which is in line with the municipality of Odense's goal to be number one bicycle city of the world. To make the area attractive to citizens in general the area also serves as a sculpture park in the spaces between the enclaves. The sculptures should reflect the research within robot technology conducted at SBC_O and SDU.
SCENARIOS FOR FUTURE USE
Kollision contributed with a number of scenarios identifying actors and exemplifying how different actors of SBC_O's will take part in developing and using the area over time. The scenarios were communicated in a diagrammatic graphic form followed by a short text focusing on the future life of SBC_O's many user groups rather than focusing on the physical architecture.
