EVALUATING LEARNING SPACES
In autumn 2005 we were asked to evaluate of the newly rebuilt learning spaces at Skovgaard School in Gentofte. The areas were rebuilt as part of the SKUB project as a testbed to serve as reference areas for further development. Design of the areas and participatory processes at the school were undertaken by NORD Architects and SRL Architects.
PARTICIPATORY OBSERVATION
During several weeks, we facilitated workshops with students and staff and conducted participatory observation, taken part in the everyday life of the school, following classes, and conducting in situ interviews with students and staff. The aim of this process was to get a better understanding of the areas and how they were used – as well as perceived – by the students and staff.
RESULTS
The results from the evaluation were summed up in a detailed report, describing best practice as well as areas with room for improvement. The report looked into both the experiences from the participatory process as well as daily life in the rebuilt areas. The results were used to adjust the next phase of rebuilding at the Skovgaard School and other schools in the area.
