SHEIK ZAYED KNOWLEDGE CENTER
In July 2000, SHL was invited to participate in a competition for a Media and Information Centre in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. Kollision was offered to participate in the project as media and technology consultants, and as consultants concerning 3D modelling, animating and communicating the building to the developer, Sheik Zayed.
The project outlined a form consisting of two coils around a central closed plaza. This form mimicked nature in the form of waves and galactic celestial bodies. The two coils provided protection against sun and heat, while the huge plaza served as distribution space between the building's many floors and facilities. The arrival to the building was through a several hundred meters long covered promenade connecting to Abu Dhabi's coastline.
Kollision created a series of concepts for how the architecture in a more dynamic fashion could accommodate people, activities and media. Through small animations we communicated how users could interact with different elements of the architecture and change the function of specific spaces.
