TRANEGÅRD SCHOOL

In spring 2005, we were invited to re-design Tranegård School as part of the SKUB project in collaboration with SRL Architects. Our role was to facilitate a participatory design process together with SRL, involving staff, students, parents and neighbours in the re-design of the old school into a building, which would meet the requirements of modern day learning spaces.

In collaboration with the SKUB Secretariat and SRL Architects, we defined a participation and communication strategy focusing on the both challenges and inherent resistance among primarily the staff and parents against changing a school to meet a new learning paradigm and the possibilities, which could emerge from a re-design of the old buildings.

Based on a series of workshops and meetings with both students, parents and staff a proposal was put forward based on a step-by-step process where selected areas were rebuilt as reference areas, i.e. 1:1 prototypes of classrooms, corridors, group areas etc., which were tested over a period of several months before deciding on a model for the entire re-design. In the summer of 2006 the proposal for the entire redesign was decided and the rebuilding of the entire school was initiated.
