UCRAC
In September 2009, Kollision was invited to facilitate a one-week workshop on video sketching as part of the four-week U-CRAC workshop. U-CRAC is an acronym for User driven Creation Academy and aims to involve businesses with customer-centric innovation needs in education-based research, resulting in innovative multi-disciplinary processes and design solutions. U-CRAC is an established collaboration between University College Jutland, Architecture and Design and Interactive Digital Media and Experience Design at Aalborg University.
VIDEO SKETCHING
Based on simple and rapid methods of production, the students were asked to stage their ideas and activities. During the process, it was not allowed to use other sketching methods such as paper and pencil to force participants away from the drawing table and into a deeper understanding of space and the roles which were necessary for the dissemination of their concept. During the weeklong, workshop students were introduced to more advanced techniques such as chroma-keying and camera-matching, which was an offer to the participants who were already familiar with video editing and 3D modelling.
RESULT
The aim of the week was not a series of perfectly produced videos, but rather to create an awareness of the video medium as a sketching tool. Consequently the groups submitted videos of varying quality – both in terms of form and content - and on this basis they were asked to reflect on the method's ability to help them with their particular task.
