DONUT

Donut is a dynamic light sculpture designed as a geometric volume that loops back onto itself to create a closed ring – topologically a torus or donut, from which the artwork takes its name. The surface of the sculpture appears as a black grid of LED light sources positioned at every grid point. Together, they form a continuous digital canvas where light, colour and movement unfold across the entire structure. Its expression can shift from flickering monochromatic constellations to flowing, pulsating and more complex patterns of colorful light. Donut can either stand or be suspended freely in space and is designed to be experienced from all sides. The light not only lives on the surface of the sculpture but bleeds onto its surroundings, actively shaping the space in which Donut is situated.

The sculpture is constructed from 48 interconnected LED grids, each containing 64 individually controllable LEDs – a total of 3,072 points of light. The individual grids are joined using custom-designed 3D-printed brackets, connecting the planar elements into the sculpture’s three-dimensional geometry. The entire surface is digitally mapped and organised into groups and systems, making it possible to work with light across the sculpture’s many facets.

Kollision designed and developed Donut as both a physical light sculpture and a digital platform for evolving light expressions. Kollision’s MAP software is used for the dynamic control and programming of the light in 3D, allowing new visual expressions to be developed for different spaces, situations and contexts. Donut is therefore not tied to a single lighting design or location but can be staged and adapted anew each time it encounters a different space. Most recently, Donut was exhibited at Wahlberg & Friends as part of Sydhavnens Festival on 14–15 August 2026.
