KOLDING STORCENTER

In 2024, Kolding Storcenter introduced a new architectural lighting concept as part of a major extension of the shopping centre. Developed in close dialogue with Serup Ark, linear LED lighting was integrated into a series of perforated facade elements, complementing the new entrances and establishing a distinctive architectural identity after dark. The project demonstrated how architecture and light can transform large-scale retail buildings. New entrances, perforated facade panels and integrated lighting introduced rhythm, scale and detail to previously monolithic concrete surfaces, creating a more welcoming and human-centred experience both day and night.

In 2026, the concept was expanded beyond the original extension to encompass key areas across Kolding Storcenter. Building on the architectural language established by Serup Ark, the lighting strategy evolved into a coherent identity connecting existing and new parts of the centre. 48 perforated facade panels now form a continuous architectural layer across the site spanning almost 800 meters. Integrated into these elements are more than 680 meters of linear LED fixtures, positioned on both sides of each facade panel to wash adjacent wall surfaces with light. Together, the illuminated panels establish a new scale for the large facades, introducing depth, texture and visual rhythm while reinforcing the centre’s contemporary architectural expression. As part of the expansion, four newly upgraded entrance areas were incorporated into the lighting scheme. Carefully integrated wash luminaires accentuate the vertical surfaces surrounding the entrances, highlighting the architectural interventions by Serup Ark while creating welcoming and clearly identifiable points of arrival.

Controlled through Kollision’s MAP platform, the lighting installation transforms facades and entrances into a unified architectural composition capable of supporting both everyday illumination and dynamic content. Previously, the site relied primarily on high-mast lighting across the parking areas, leaving the buildings largely absent after dark. Today, illuminated facades and entrance zones strengthen orientation, enhance the experience of arrival and contribute to a safer and more welcoming environment. The result is a clear architectural identity visible across the site after dark.
