ART AND TECHNOLOGY
In May 2010, Kollision was commissioned by ArT - Art and Technology - an institution under University of Aalborg – to create a website reflecting their brand, positioning ArT in the cross-section of design, art and science. Based on our previous work with the projects arosWeb and newSub, we suggested a similar approach, avoiding deep hierarchies in favour of an experience-oriented an explorative map metaphor, allowing ArT to handle content themselves within a tight framework. The result was the software MapWeb, which has since been developed further and used in numerous other projects.
AN EXPLORATIVE FRONT-END
The front-end presents the user with a large ‘map’ with content objects distributed by the administrators. ‘Dragging’ the large map or using one of the menus or the mini-map navigates the front-end. To access content the user clicks on a content object and subsequently on sub-items.
A SIMPLE BACK-END
It was essential for us to develop a system so simple that users without knowledge of programming or graphic work could continuously update content. Consequently, we developed a back-end based on flash, php, and MySQL, using the same map metaphor as the front-end. The back-end allows users to create new content objects and place them easily on a large background image. For each content object users can create a number of sub-items containing text, images and video. All content is formatted based on a simple template, which is easy to change, reformatting all content on the front-end.
