SOUND WAVE LIGHT WAVE

Kulturrummet is a mix of a park and adjoining cultural activities and buildings that offer learning facilities and experiences for people of all ages in Thisted in Thy. One of the town’s offerings is the new music school designed by Kjaer & Richter, where citizens can attend concerts or play their own music. Kollision was asked by Kjaer & Richter to develop a light art installation for the music school.

The art installation is based on a line of light washing down the façade facing a public park. A continuous line of light, spanning the width of the building, consisting of individual controllable RGB LED light sources, is located at the top of the building. The light sources are mounted in between the building and the adjacent roof carried by columns. The light changes in color, intensity and dynamics based on the music played inside the music school. A continuous analysis of the sound influences the brightness and colors of the light so that 'sound waves of light' are drawn in real-time on the facade. When the sound is high and varied this is reflected in the light, creating more intense colours and vibrant waves. The installation reflects the function and activities of the music school and invite passers-by inside. When there is no live music in the building, the installation returns to a default state with soft movements of light and custom colours slowly changing.

Kollision developed the art installation in dialogue with Kjaer & Richter, handled lighting design and provided the player – MAP – for controlling the dynamic lighting design based on sound input. We also handled the detailing of the installation and supervised the installation.
