THE PRISON

In 2012, The former Horsens State Penitentiary was transformed into a new cultural institution, The Prison (Fængslet), focusing on experiences and events. Today, the historic building accommodates a prison museum, a shop, a hotel and a large shared office space, as well as facilitating activities like international conferences, festivals and concerts.

Kollision was asked to design and integrate a dynamic lighting design concept to emphasize the authenticity of the Prison buildings as well as letting the monumental institution function as a cultural beacon in relation to seasons and events from the central position on the hill. In close dialogue with The Prison we designed a lighting design based on RGB wash fixtures and moving heads with custom gobos all controlled by our MAP player. The Light sources are strategically positioned on poles around the large building, covering the west and north facades. The four moving heads add an extra layer onto the wash lights and draw geometries in coherent and subtle movements or contribute with random search lights reminding us of the time when the building was an active penitentiary.

Kollision designed, detailed and programmed the installation in dialogue with SGM who supplied fixtures and Strøm Hansen who carried out the installation.
